What is COVID-19 (Coronavirus)?
COVID-19 is a new type of Coronavirus that can cause an infection of the lungs and airways. Often this virus causes mild symptoms like a cold or flu, however, in older people and in people with certain underlying medical conditions, it can cause more severe illness such as pneumonia (an infection of the lungs) which may require high-level hospital care. The current outbreak is putting significant strain on our healthcare system, not only from those unwell with COVID-19, but also because of the resources it will take away from our usual healthcare needs. Due to the seriousness of this outbreak, and the number of people at risk, the New Zealand Government has set in place a four-level COVID-19 alert system. This alerts us to the specific health and social measures to be taken. The current COVID-19 National Alert Level is 3 out of 4. Level 4 - the highest - will begin 25/03/2020

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
These symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure Fever or high temperature, Cough, Shortness of breath If you have these symptoms and have recently been overseas, or have been in close contact with someone confirmed with COVID-19, please telephone Healthline (for free) on 0800 358 5453 or phone your local GP for instructions. It is important NOT to go into any public areas, like your doctors surgery, to prevent the potential spread of viruses.

How is it spread?

Like the flu, COVID-19 is contagious, meaning it can spread from person to person. It can be spread from an infected person through droplets from coughing, sneezing or close contact. It can also spread through contact with objects with virus on it and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

Disinfect surfaces that are touched frequently

Clean surfaces - the virus can survive on some surfaces for up to three days, use disinfectant on frequently touched surfaces (doorknobs, bathrooms, and kitchen surfaces).

Self Isolation
Be kind and patient - we are all getting through this together. Stay at home - this reduces the spread and the risk to yourself and others. Physical distancing - avoid close or prolonged contact with people, keeping a distance of 2 meters.

What if I need to see my GP?
If you wish to book an appointment, it’s best to call up your GP clinic or go online to book. Do not just turn up as your clinic may ask you to wait in your car for a phone call. General Practice has been asked to conduct up to 70% of their appointments digitally, so your clinic may call you up to see if you really need a face to face visit, or if a phone or video call or email would cater to your needs. Some procedures may require you to visit elsewhere - so best to contact the clinic first.

What if I just have a fever, cough or cold-like symptoms?

Flu Vaccinations are available

Its good to get your flu-shot! Those over 65 years old, have chronic health conditions, and those who are pregnant are HIGHLY recommended to get your immunisation early. You can call your GP to find the best time to get your flu-shot.
